Article summary

A popular way to organize fiction materials is through a classification system known as Genrefication. As implied by the name, Genrefication divides books into genres or subjects for ease of browsing. Many libraries are choosing to maintain their current classification system for their non-fiction materials, but then employ Genrefication to their fiction materials.

How is this different?

The Dewey Decimal Classification system categorizes fictional works by author. If a patron were looking to locate fantasy books, they would first need to use the public catalog to search the keyword “fantasy” then filter the results accordingly.

With Genrefication, a patron can still utilize the catalog if they choose, or they can head straight to stacks and locate the fantasy section.

Call Numbers

The call number structure for Genrefied items is quite similar to that of DDC, with the addition of one extra line to indicate the genre.

If the decision is made to Genrify your call number system, the Bulk Updates tool will allow you to efficiently Change Call Number Prefixes.
