# Resource MARC Editor

The Form Editor shows the MARC record as a simple fill-in-the-blanks form. The form shown is based on the [template](/docs/setting-resource-template) specified for the [Resource Category](/docs/setting-resource-category).

If you prefer to use a simple form for editing resource records, use the [Resource Form Editor](/docs/resource-view-edit-form) instead.

The MARC Editor is used for editing if you select Add or Edit while on the **Full Record** or **Detailed MARC** detail views.

## Editing
Simply tab to or click the field you want to edit and start typing. Some fields have multiple subfields, each with its own input.

### Auto-Complete
Fields that are designated as searchable in [Settings : Resources : MARC Fields](/docs/setting-resource-marc) have an auto-complete feature. After typing a few characters, you see a list of choices. You can continue typing the value that you want or select from the list. If you select from the list, all of the subfields will be filled in for you. _Note: Auto-complete is available on the first subfield of a field and, depending on your selection, edits or adds the other subfields._

@(Info)(Use Liberally)(Auto-complete is especially useful for values that appear in many records, such as author names and subjects. Not only does this help speed up manual cataloging, it also makes your cataloged records more consistent.)

## Adding Fields
To add a field:
1. Click the field _above_ where you want to insert a field to select that field.
2. Click the **+ Add Field** button or press `Ctrl`+`Ins` on your keyboard.
3. A new empty field will appear below.
4. Select the MARC field you want to insert.
![resource-view-edit-marc-add](https://cdn.document360.io/dd4d24fa-d091-45a6-be6a-9adef7b432ec/Images/Documentation/resource-view-edit-marc-add.png){height="" width=""}
5. Select the subfield.
![resource-view-edit-marc-add2](https://cdn.document360.io/dd4d24fa-d091-45a6-be6a-9adef7b432ec/Images/Documentation/resource-view-edit-marc-add2.png){height="" width=""}
6. Enter the value for the subfield.
7. Add any additional subfields using the **+Add Subfield** button or press `Alt`+`Ins`on your keyboard.

@(Warning)(MARC Fields Must Appear in Numerical Order)(The fields in MARC records must be in numerical order based on the tag number. Surpass Cloud will allow you to select only the MARC fields that can be inserted in this location.)

## Moving Fields
MARC Fields must appear in numerical order by MARC tag, but you can rearrange fields that are all the same MARC tag. For example, you might have several topical subject (650) fields. You can rearrange them by dragging and dropping the little tab at the top.

## Adding Subfields
To add a subfield to an existing field:
1. Click the field you want to edit to select it.
2. Click the **+Add Subfield** button or press `Alt`+`Ins`on your keyboard.
3. Select the subfield.

4. Enter the value for the subfield.

@(Warning)(Some Subfields Cannot Repeat)(Some subfields can appear only once within a MARC field. If you don't see a choice for the subfield you want to insert, that might be the reason.)

## Removing Fields
To delete a field:
1. Click the caption (e.g. "650 Subj:Topic") of the field you want to delete.
2. Click the **Delete** button on the popup.

Alternatively, you can click the field you select it and press `Ctrl`+`Del` to delete it.

## Removing Subfields
There is no special button to remove subfields. If you want to remove the data in a subfield, just clear the contents using your keyboard.

## Editing Indicators
To edit an indicator:
1. Click the indicators on the field you want to edit.

2. Make your selections for the first and second indicators.

@(Warning)(Default Indicators are Usually Fine)(Indicators are one of the more technical aspects of MARC records. Unless you are a MARC cataloging expert and want to have the most technically perfect cataloging possible, it's usually fine to leave the indicators alone. When adding new fields, Surpass Cloud automatically adds default indicators when you add fields and the values don't usually make any difference in practical use. There is one exception, though: non-filing character indicators in fields that contain titles. These affect sorting and searching. Surpass fills these in automatically based on the title, indicating that the first _x_ characters of a title should be ignored in sorting because they are punctuation or the articles "A," "An," or "The." You might want to edit these in the cases where the title begins with non-English articles that should be ignored.)
